Notes for Greger Mattson Lillie:

[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 12, Ed. 1, Tree #3318, Date of Import: Nov 2, 2001]

Greger Mattson lived in Tyresjo, in Sodertorn. He was a Vapnare (Squire) in 1457, of the King's Council and Judge in Westmanland Province in 1480, knighted in 1484, Judge of Upland Province in 1491. He was buried at the Gray Friars Monastery, Stockholm, Sweden.

He was the first recorded member of the family to have the surname LILLIE. Descendants of Andreas BATH in all generations had the surnames LILLJE, LILLJA, and LILLIE in Sweden.

Greger Mattson was accounted for having the family name LILLIE in addition to his father. Before that time, the family used the paternal baptismal name system. Son and dotter mean son and daughter in Sweden.

His wife, Anna GADDA, was a daughter of a knight and king's councillor, Jon Carlson GADDA, of Gaddaholm, Sweden.

He opposed King Charles VIII Knutson Bonde at one time, but was sent in 1464, with other delegates, to Danzig to recall the King, and in 1466 to Raseborg for the same purpose. He finally signed on Laramessodagen, 1485, Sten Sture's law, regulating the goldsmiths.

According to the history provided by Gustavus Anjou, King Christian of Denmark was called in by the archbishop and made King of Sweden when King Charles sailed for Danzig about 1464. A nephew of the archbishop revolted and defeated the new king. King Charles returned but left again and retired to Raseborg, a castle in Finland and abdicated his throne in 1465.

The husband of Greger Mattson LILLIE's sister Clara, Eric Axelson TOTT, was made Regent or King for a time. King Charles returns in 1467 until 1470, when he designated Sten Sture his successor.

Then apparently King Christian returns at some point.

During the last part of the 1400's, the learned institutions of Cologne, Prague, Leipzig and Bologna, but chiefly Paris, the greatest of them all, were filled by Swedish young scholars. The Swedes had three collegia in Paris, and the office of rector or president of the Paris University, the highest dignity of learning in the world, was held by Swedish citizens. Many Swede settled, accordingly, in France, and Paris, and a large number remained there permanently.

Mathias Gregory, Greger's son, was a Bishop at Strangnas Cathedral. He was a teacher, a member of the Council of State and chancellor to the Regent. Bishop Mathias, it is said, had so much to do with the affairs of the country, that he had no time left for his bishoprie. He was the first person executed at Stockholm Blodbad (Blood Bath) of 1520. Folke Gregerson and Bengt Gregerson two other sons were also executed in the Bloodbath.

There is some disagreement in two sources but Greger Mattson himself may also have been executed in the Bloodbath, to have been beheaded by King Christian. The Bishops Matthias of Strangnas and Vincentius of Skara, and thirteen noblemen eith thirty-one town councillors and burgers of Stockholm were convicted of having signed the Diet of Arboga decree, 1517, that Christian should never become King of Sweden.

Eighty-two persons were executed at this carnage of Stockholm, as it was called, which was extended even to Finland, and to the provinces. The king, Christian, marked his return by executions and mass murder everywhere, and six hundred persons are estimated to have been killed through his order during his short stay in Sweden. These excesses led to a revolution, which placed Gustaf Ericson Wasa on the throne.[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 24, Ed. 1, Tree #0246, Date of Import: Jan 10, 2000]

Notes for Sone Sonesson:

[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 12, Ed. 1, Tree #3318, Date of Import: Nov 2, 2001]

Sone was a member of the King's Council or Bench in 1369. He lived in Lagno, Sodermanland, Sweden.

It was during his time that King Magnus announced in 1335 that no Christian within his realm should remain a thrall, thus practically abolishing the remnants of slavery. He was at the time one of the mightiest monarchs of Europe. It was also during his time the Black Death came from England in 1350, and nearly one third of the population perished in certain parts of Sweden. Magnus was captured and made a prisoner at Enkoping, 1363, and Albrecht Jr., son of Duke Albrecht of Mecklenburg, was chosen king. He, and his father, surrounded themselves with a great number of Germans, who, through their licentiousness and overbearing manner, enraged the people.

Gustave Anjou's story of the LILLE family in Sweden becomes confusing at this point describing the titles and descriptions of the family members. But one thing is certain, the LILLE family was an important one in Swedish history. Some, including the wives, were related to the various kings and queens and most all were nobles who were part of the royal court. They were active in government and were instrumental in shaping and controlling the events of Sweden during this time, rather than being observers of history with no control over the events of their lives.

Descendants of SONE's sons became governors and noblemen, with titles of Count, Baron, and Earl in the 1500's and 1600's. One descendant was exiled to Holland in 1672 for having a son out of wedlock with a Princess Juliana, but retained his title and was buried in the family-vault in Kimsted, Sweden.

Gustave ANJOU also describes a family that was very much tied to the Catholic church. It was an integral part of their lives. One descendant became a Bishop, Mathias Gregory, and other descendants became priests and nuns of the Church. Lands and property were frequently given to the church, though it would seem certain that with their position as a family, they did not always have the favor of the peasants and those of lessor status around them.

Andreas Bath made a will in 1291 A.D. in Predikarebroderna, on Lake Maler, in Sodermanland Province, Sverige (Sweden). He lived in Froberga, Ofver-Sela Socken (Parish), in Sodermanland Province. The province is southwest of Stockholm.

He bequeathed all his property to the Monks of Strangnas Abbey.

This was the most classical period of Old Sweden, between the years 1200 and 1350. The language of this period offers a number of dialects, of which only one, the Gutnie, is strictly defined. It did not differ very much from the Old Norse or Old Icelandic.

One of nine godfathers at christening of future King Edward I Longshanks.

BET. 1239 - 1241 Sheriff of Kent and constable of Dover Castle.

Excerpted from Les Seigneurs de Bohon by Jean LeMelletier, Coutances:

Arnaud-Bellee, 1978: Humphrey V, second earl of Hereford, first earl of Essex, and constable of England, was also called the good earl of Hereford. He was a contemporary of Henry III and died 24 September 1274/5. Born before 1208, Humphrey married twice. His first wife was Maud (Mathilda), daughter of Ralph

of Lusignan, count d'Eu (who died 1219). His second wife was Maud (Mathilda) of Avebury, daughter and heiress of Roger of Tosny (who died 1264). Humphrey succeeded his father on 1 June 1220, then came into possession of his lands and was confirmed earl of Hereford. After the death of his maternal uncle, William of Mandeville, he inherited the title of earl of Essex (28 April 1228). In 1227 Humphrey V helped solve a quarrel between Henry III and his brother, Richard, earl of Cornwall (whom Humphrey supported). He declared his intentions to postpone the judgment of the king's court and royal lords. The king refused and ordered him to submit or give up his titles. With other important barons Humphrey took the side of Richard. The conspirators raised an army, and at Stamford (Lincoln) they demanded the reinstatement of the earl's duties, an apology, and the confirmation of the liberties guaranteed by the document. The king conceded. Humphrey was reinstated as marshall of the king's house. He served at the marriage of Henry III and Eleanor of Provence (1236), and was one of nine godfathers at the christening of the future Edward

I (1239). In 1242 Henry III led an expedition to reconquer Poitou, which was occupied by Louis VIII of France. Humphrey accompanied him in Gascogny, but became irritated by the influence of the strangers/counselors under the king. He returned to England with the duke of Cornwall. The expedition later ended as a loss. Two years later with the earl of Clare, Humphrey took part in the suppression of a Welsh revolt. After an initial success, they were defeated, partly because the earl had been accused of embezzling part of the inheritance of his sister-in-law, Isabelle (wife of David who was son of Llewelyn). In 1246 Humphrey joined in a letter to Pope Innocent IV denouncing the oppression exercised over England by the court of Rome. In 1248 Humphrey was presented to Parliament. In 1250 he took the cross and went to the Holy Land.

In the meantime the queen was lavishing favors on the French in her entourage and the king increased his spending, causing discontent among the barons. In 1253 Humphrey participated in a grand remonstrance made to the king at Westminster Hall with the "bell, book, and candle" for violations against the Magna Carta, a prelude to the revolt. The same year he founded the church of the Augustin Brothers on Broad Street in London. In 1254 he was in Gascogny with the king. From 1256-1258 "Mr. Humphrey de Boun" participated in many battles with the Welsh. In 1259 he was one of the barons who worked to re-establish a truce between King Henry III and Llewelyn, Prince of Wales. But the following year there were again hostilities between the two. The king

summoned Richard of Clare and Humphrey de Bohon to the army with other lords, Humphrey de Boun Jr. and Frank de Boun. Humphrey was one of the councillors to draw up the Provisions of Oxford in 1258 which affirmed

the Magna Carta and reformed its misuse. He was one of the Council of Fifteen that advised the king. The next year he was commissioner to ratify a treaty between France and England. In 1260 Humphrey was a traveling judge for the counties of Hereford, Gloucester, and Worcester. In 1262, he negotiated peace with Llewelyn of Wales. Humphrey V's attitude toward the new conflicts between the king and the barons has been confused with that of his son. When the barons divided their confederation Humphrey sided with Simon de

Montfort. In 1263 he was one of the important barons who supported the king while his son was on the opposite side. Humphrey was taken prisoner at the Battle of Lewes. Humphrey V was chosen one of 12 arbitrators to bring peace between the king and Simon. He died 24 September 1275 on the way to Kenilworth (Warwick). There the king stated the principles he was willing to compromise on to end the revolt surrounding Kenilworth Castle. Humphrey was

buried with his ancestors at Lanthony.

REF: "Falls the Shadow" Sharon Kay Penman: On April 3, 1264 King Henry leads his Red Dragon Standard & Army for Northampton, where most of Simon de Montfort's forces are. April 4, 1264 they arrive at Northampton & confer with Prince Edward (the real leader of the Royalist forces) for a strategy session, those present included Philip Basset (whose son-in-law Sir Hugh le Despenser was an ally of Simon's), Humphrey de Bohun V the Earl of Hereford whose son Humphrey de Bohun VI was with Simon, Hugh le Bigod was there & his step son Baldwin Wake was with Simon. Daffydd ap Gruffydd was also there, as he continued to be in exile in England, aliied with Prince Edward against his own brother Llywelyn ap Gruffydd.

Notes for Renauld De Dustainville:

Reginald de Dunstanville, 3rd of the fourteen illegitimate sons of King Henry I by the dau. of Robert Corbet, was made Earl of Cornwall by King Stephen, anno 1140. Notwithstanding which, he subsequently espoused the cause of the Empress Maud and was in rebellion until the fall of Stephen's power at the battle of Lincoln. From which period we find nothing remarkable of him until the 10th Henry II [1164], when he appears to have been an unsuccessful mediator between that monarch and the haughty prelate, Thomas à Becket. His lordship was afterward in arms on the side of the king against Robert, Earl of Leicester (who had reared the standard of revolt in favour of Prince Henry, the king's son), and joined Richard de Luci, justice of England, in the siege of Leicester; the town of which they carried, but not the castle. His lordship m. Beatrice, dau. of William FitzRichard, a potent man of Cornwall, and d. in 1175 when, leaving no legitimate male issue, the Earldom of Cornwall reverted to the crown and was retained by King Henry II for the use of John, his younger son, excepting a small proportion which devolved upon the deceased lord's daus., viz., Hawyse, m. to Richard de Redvers; Maud, m. to Robert, Earl of Mellent; Ursula, m. to Walter de Dunstanville; Sarah, m. to the Viscount of Limoges; and Reginald de Dunstanville, d. 1175. Besides his legitimate daus. above-mentioned, the earl left by Beatrice de Vaux, lady of Torre and Karswell, two bastard sons, Henry and William, whereof the elder, Henry, surnamed FitzCount, became a person of great celebrity.Rainald is well known as the Earl of Cornwall, called also Rainald de Dunstanville, perhaps indicating the place of his birth. He helped to foment trouble against Stephen in Normandy, then headed a successful rising in the West Country in support of Matilda and was rewarded by her with his earldom in 1141. Rainald had married a wealthy heiress, Beatrice, daughter of William FitzRichard, 'a man of large estates in Cornwall.' It was not Henry I's policy to establish his bastards on large estates belonging to the crown; rather he used his powers of wardship and marriage to marry them off well. Most of Robert of Gloucester's great domain came to him through his wife and, although Rainald did not marry until five years after Henry's death, he was following a pattern which was well established. Thanks to the conditions of the Anarchy and his support for Matilda and then Henry II, a precedent was set that Rainald had direct control of the country and did not account for it to the exchequer. Much as Henry II must have disliked the condition he no doubt felt it unwise to strip a firm ally of considerable powers, and it was not until Rainald died in 1175, without a male heir, that the king again gained control of the revenues of the county, the earldom reverting to the crown.

William II (called William Rufus, the "Red King") came to the throne in 1087. He was a harsh ruler and few mourned him when he was killed by an arrow shot by an unknown hand while he was hunting (see William, Kings of England). Robert had gone off on the First Crusade, to recover the Holy Land from the Turks. A third son, Henry I, was therefore able to become king without a struggle, in 1100. When Robert returned, Henry crossed the Channel, defeated him, and gained Normandy also. He gave both England and western France a peaceful, orderly rule (see Henry, Kings of England).

Henry I exacted a promise from the barons to recognize his daughter Matilda as their ruler. However, when he died, some of the barons broke their promise and instead chose Stephen, a grandson of William the Conqueror. Stephen was a gallant knight but a weak king. Throughout his reign lawless barons fought private wars, each seeking to increase his power. Twice he was challenged by Matilda and her supporters, who nearly defeated him in 1141. When Stephen died (1154), the people were ready to welcome a strong ruler who would restore order.

Henry I (of England) (1068-1135), third Norman king of England (1100-1135), fourth son of William the Conqueror. Henry was born in Selby. Because his father, who died in 1087, left him no land, Henry made several unsuccessful attempts to gain territories on the Continent. On the death of his brother William II in 1100, Henry took advantage of the absence of another brother—Robert, who had a prior claim to the throne—to seize the royal treasury and have himself crowned king at Westminster. Henry subsequently secured his position with the nobles and with the church by issuing a charter of liberties that acknowledged the feudal rights of the nobles and the rights of the church. In 1101 Robert, who was duke of Normandy, invaded England, but Henry persuaded him to withdraw by promising him a pension and military aid on the Continent. In 1102 Henry put down a revolt of nobles, who subsequently took refuge in Normandy, where they were aided by Robert. By defeating Robert at Tinchebray, France, in 1106, Henry won Normandy. During the rest of his reign, however, he constantly had to put down uprisings that threatened his rule in Normandy. The conflict between Henry and Anselm, archbishop of Canterbury, over the question of lay investiture (the appointment of church officials by the king), was settled in 1107 by a compromise that left the king with substantial control in the matter.

Because he had no surviving male heir, Henry was forced to designate his daughter Matilda as his heiress. After his death on December 1, 1135, at Lyons-la-Fôret, Normandy, however, Henry's nephew, Stephen of Blois, usurped the throne, plunging the country into a protracted civil war that ended only with the accession of Matilda's son, Henry II, in 1154."Henry I (of England)," Microsoft (R) Encarta.
